The Museum of City and Sea is housed in the 1892 premium heritage building ‘The Bond Store’ on Wellington’s waterfront. In 1999 the building was restored to its former glory and a new staircase and lift shaft added. To satisfy Council the new structure needed to be significantly different from the existing building so as not to be read as original. For this reason Athfield Architects specified VM Anthra Zinc, Cassette Panel System. The Cassette Panel system is distinct for its flatness and aesthetics of the open joint, producing an elegant linear facade. Athfield Architect’s design was a bold and dramatic addition to such an important historical building.
